Jil Sander - Part I
About a year ago, German designer Jil Sander (at age 68) returned to her own label, which was launched in 1968, for the third time, after 8 years of absence. She started her career as a fashion designer at age 25. Her first womenswear collection , consisting of 150 pieces, sold within a week. Several years later, Sander started showing her collections during Paris fashion week but received mostly lukewarm reviews. Her clothes were always perfectly tailored and made of the highest quality fabrics but at the same time very simple and embellishment or blink free and therefore did not please everybody. Discouraged by lack of interest in the fashion capital of the world, Jil Sander decided to focus on Milan and from late 80's begun showing her collections in Italy. Named "Queen of Simplicity", she became known as one of the pioneers of minimalist movement in fashion (together with Miuccia Prada and Austrian designer Helmut Lang). Her sleek, wearable pieces were favored by executive, professional women, she herself exemplified. The company was doing great, eventually cosmetics and fragrances were launched as well. In 1989, the company (or to be precised, one third of the company) went public on the Frankfurt and Hamburg stock exchanges. IPO raised $56 million capital and Sander became the only female executive of a publicly traded company in Germany. In 1993, Jil Sander's flagship store opened in Paris on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne.
